Condition Report

The Belle Époque in Palermo. Targa Florio and the birth of Sport. Important collection of photographs: they have documented the first and most important sporting events of Palermo, Car racing, Aviation and Rowing, with portraits of various members of the Florio family and their friends, in different places in Sicily and Italy. Regarding the Targa Florio we have: The 'Corsa delle Vetturette' (single cylinder) of 1907 in which appear the pilots Norman Olsen, Cesare Airoldi, Vincenzo Florio on cars De Dion and S. Naudin su Sizaire (sheets 12, 13, 14, 15). In 1907, Vincenzo Florio was also involved in the challenge to English Wonwiller in an air race to be held at the airfield of Palermo: many photographs of airplanes appear on sheets 7, 8 and 17. As for the rowing, wonderful photograph of 1903: the navigator and the eight rowers, in white t-shirt but sleeveless to enhance the musculature of the arms, the crew called 'Per Cominciare' (For Beginning), first in the Regatta of Naples, April 1903 . There are also numerous photographs of prestigious cars, some by the Carrosserie Gangloff of Geneva, active from 1903 to 1933, and by the Carrozzeria A. Chiallone of Lugano, closed in 1933. There are also sailboats and boats. See "Lo Sport e la Belle Époque al tempo dei Florio", in "Lo sport e la società nell'Europa del novecento" by Prof. Vincenzo Pennone Milano, 23 maggio 2013.
