Condition Report

First illustrated edition. The plates are by FrankCraig. Thebook is notable for containing the Poem "If", Kipling's most enduringwork of verse, voted the UK's favourite poem in a BBC poll of 2005. Originallywritten in 1895, "If" was inspired by the actions of Dr. LeanderStarr Jameson, a British Officer whose forces were massacred by the Boers in1895, but who was portrayed as a victorious hero by the British press (it mustbe admitted that knowing this throws a somewhat darker aspect on the lines,"If you can keep your head when all about you / are losing theirs andblaming it on you"...). In this edition appears, opposite the Titlepage, the Kipling crest, a swastika within a circle; Kipling will renounce theuse of this ancient symbol, which directly refers to Ganesha, Shiva's son whogives prosperity and good fortune, when it becomes the emblem of Nazism. Twoonly copy in Iccu.
