Condition Report

First edition. In this treatise Dolce supports the primacy of Venetian painting, whose leading exponent is Titian, compared to that of Florence. The new Renaissance school of northern Italy, with Correggio, Parmigianino, Pordenone and Tiziano, is opposed to the Michelangelese cult advocated by Vasari. The work is entitled 'Aretino' in homage to one of the most influential personalities of the Venetian society of the time, and the perfection of art is identified in Titian, to whom only the glory of 'perfect colorire' can be attributed. Cicognara 110. Schlosser Magnino, pp.392 and 401. Leg 1354.
