Condition Report

First illustrated edition. The plates are by Frank Craig. The book is notable for containing the Poem "If", Kipling's most enduring work of verse, voted the UK's favourite poem in a BBC poll of 2005. Originally written in 1895, "If" was inspired by the actions of Dr. Leander Starr Jameson, a British Officer whose forces were massacred by the Boers in 1895, but who was portrayed as a victorious hero by the British press (it must be admitted that knowing this throws a somewhat darker aspect on the lines, "If you can keep your head when all about you / are losing theirs and blaming it on you"...). In this edition appears, opposite the Title page, the Kipling crest, a swastika within a circle; Kipling will renounce the use of this ancient symbol, which directly refers to Ganesha, Shiva's son who gives prosperity and good fortune, when it becomes the emblem of Nazism.
