Condition Report

Beautiful edition. Bernardo Quaranta, a Neapolitan scholar and archaeologist, analyzes an emerald found in Cuma, with a lion-headed snake depicted on the obverse and an inscription on the reverse, visible in the engraving by Raffaele Biondi on the title page. According to Forty, the emerald belonged to the Ophites, whose name derives from the Greek ofis, which means snake. They, also known as Naasseni, from nahash, serpent in Hebrew, venerated the corrupter of Adam and Eve, believed to be the giver to men of the knowledge of Good and Evil precluded by the God of the Old Testament, creator of the world, but, held by gnosis, lower than the supreme God. Author of numerous works of Greek and Latin epigraphy, such as on mosaics and paintings of Pompeii and on the papyri of Herculaneum, Quaranta also wrote important memoirs published, in particular, in the periodical of the Royal Bourbon Museum
